NAWBO Members Vote for New OfficersOnce again, it is that time of year where you get to cast your ballot for our NAWBO leadership team for next year. Our chapter is in a period of growth and rejuvenation and it will be important to provide these leaders with the energy of your support by way of your vote. Each candidate believes in NAWBO's mission of propelling women business owners into social, economic, and political spheres of power and each has pledged her best to continue the progress being made. On Thursday, July 14, we will celebrate and install our new officers and board at the World Trade Club, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
As the President and Principal of M. Butterfield-Brown & Associates, Ltd., May is enrolled to practice before the Internal Revenue Service and provides tax preparation and planning, audit representation, and small business consulting with an emphasis in real estate, estates and trusts. May has been a NAWBO member since 1995 and served as Board Treasurer for three terms before becoming Vice President. Upon the resignation of our previous President-Elect, she was appointed by the Board to be President-Elect, 2004-2005. She chaired our chapter's premier 2005 WEB and NAWBO-University event committees. May states, "During the past five years on the NAWBO board, I have helped our chapter work resolutely toward enabling our members to 'grow, thrive and lead.' We are committed to the new programs on diversity, leadership circle and social entrepreneurship and we will continue to provide growth-fostering connections and benefits to our members through education, relationships and support. I will be working with a strong, pro-active board to propel us to the next level and make that difference in our community." In May, in accordance with our chapter bylaws, a Nominating Committee composed of Jackie Reimann, (Past President 1999-2000), Mary Janaitis, (Retention Chair 2004-2005), and Susan Grant, (Past President 2001-2002) solicited and interviewed candidates for the board positions of Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as key Committee Chairpersons. Based on those interviews, the Nominating Committee presents the following candidates for Board Officers, 2005-2006. Nominees:
Patricia, Founder of SB Accounting Solutions, understands what it takes to be an entrepreneur through first-hand experience. At age 17, she started her own business making stained glass windows. She transitioned into a second business, designing textiles. She handled all her company business operations and accounting. Seeing a business opportunity here, since the late 1980s she has been established as a "problem solving" bookkeeper. Patricia says, "My goal as vice president of NAWBO is to promote the benefits of membership throughout the entire Bay Area. I know that women's personal goals and dreams can be strengthened by our attendance at regular NAWBO meetings, getting to know other entrepreneurs. I plan to carry out the vision of the president, assist her with recommendations on the board, and help to oversee the committees the president has selected. Most of all, I plan to create a sense of community by promoting women's unique strengths of cooperation, intellect, and ethical excellence."
With 23 years of legal experience, Teresa is a partner in the 130-attorney law firm of Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudy, LLP, and serves as the head of the Business Section. She works with both publicly traded and closely-held businesses in a wide variety of industries and markets, including start-up companies, high technology, consumer products, professional services and banking. Teresa states, "The opportunity to meet and work with dynamic and successful women business entrepreneurs continues to be inspirational and exciting for me. I am pleased to serve on the Bay Area Chapter's Board as legal counsel and to work with the members of NAWBO to help them continue to succeed. I look forward to providing additional support for NAWBO by serving as Secretary of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter."
Keating is an owner and co-founder of Hermitage Advisors, Ltd., a fee-only advisor offering investment counsel to individuals and families for the preservation and growth of their financial assets. Now in her second year as a member of NAWBO, Keating had an active role in the screening and judging of nominees for this year's WEB event. With a major in mathematics in college, Keating has many years of experience with tax accounting, spreadsheets and financial statements. As someone who changed careers and started a new business in her mid-50s, Keating wants to encourage other women to be confident of their abilities to make changes and succeed at any age. "NAWBO has an especially important role to play for women who are at the beginning stages of their entrepreneurial endeavors. Having access to and the support of other women facing the same challenges is an invaluable resource. I have to believe that there are so many more women in the Bay Area who could benefit if they only knew what NAWBO offers." As a NAWBO member, please use the ballot below to vote. June 9 Dinner Event: The Ultimate Networking DinnerBack by popular demand! NAWBO-SF's most popular meeting is our networking dinner. It's a great way to meet women business owners and find out what they're doing as you promote the merits of your own business. You'll have lots of time to network during cocktails and over dinner! Although we won't match you up with specific owners, we will make an effort to let you know about businesses that relate to yours. Second Tuesday - Mastermind SeriesMastermind is an advisory board program for women leading businesses. Participants, who commit to attending the six-month cycle, meet on the second Tuesday of each month for continental breakfast. Mastermind provides program members with an advisory board of NAWBO women who share business know-how, feedback, and insight from their own experience, and it's a great way to connect with other NAWBO members in a supportive environment. The most recent Mastermind Series began in January. Lawmakers and Businesses Join to Demand Federal Marketplace Be Open to Women70 Members of Congress File Friend of Court Brief to Support Lawsuit At long last there is concerted action to demand that women-owned businesses receive their fair share of Federal Government contracts. Your membership in NAWBO has supported the efforts to accomplish these first steps. Keep up the good work! — Sharon WASHINGTON – Today, Members of Congress joined with women business owners from across the country—frustrated by the lack of federal contracts that are going to women owned businesses—to demand that the administration implement the women's procurement program. The program would expand opportunities for women business owners in the federal marketplace. A broad coalition of 71 Members filed an amicus brief today in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in support of the United States Women's Chamber of Commerce (USWCC) lawsuit against the Small Business Administration (SBA), which would require the administration to immediately implement the program. "Despite the amazing growth of women business owners, one area they continue to be shut out of is the federal marketplace," Congresswoman Velázquez said. "The irony here is that the federal marketplace has increased by $100 billion over the past four years. At the same time, studies have shown that 40 percent of women businesses offer a product or service that can be used by the federal government. However, agencies today are doing multi-billion dollar contracts with large corporations—and out of this entire pie, less than 3 percent of their contracts go to women businesses." The Federal Government has failed to meet its five percent mandated women business contracting goal for the past five years. A big reason for this is the Bush administration's failure to implement the Women's Procurement Program, which was signed into law in 2000. This failure has cost women business owners $25 billion in lost contracting opportunities over the past five years. The USWCC filed the lawsuit in October 2004. However, SBA has failed to make any effort since the lawsuit was filed to get the program up and running, which prompted members of Congress to file the amicus brief in support of the USWCC suit. "Today more than ever, women continue to face a glass ceiling not only in the workplace—but now also in the federal marketplace," Congresswoman Velázquez said. "The administration has made no effort—and has taken no action—to actually move this program forward. Women business owners are tired of the lack of action and something clearly needs to be done." "This program is good for everyone—it is good for the taxpayer and it is good for the government," Congresswoman Velázquez said. "It is unfortunate that it has come to this, but the administration has failed to provide women with their fair share of opportunities for too long now. With this lawsuit we are compelling the administration to do what it has refused to do for over four years now. What women want today are contracts—not excuses." |

The May 12th program, "Get What You Want, Now!", with professional coaches, Caterina Rando and Francine Ward with Joanne Brem serving as moderator was inspirational. Each of the panelists told stories of turning points in their lives that inspired them to affect change to head down a different path. "It takes courage and a willingness to work through the fear," said Francine Ward. "You've got to risk failure, making mistakes and getting rejected to get where you want to go." We often make safe choices because we're afraid to get outside our comfort zones.
Caterina Rando suggested that we ask ourselves powerful questions in order to create a compelling vision for our future. "We need to train our brain to shift self-perception. See yourself achieving your goals. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want!" said Caterina, author of Chronicle Book's best seller, Learn to Power Think.
Francine Ward said that "willingness without action is fantasy." Both coaches gave these pointers to help affect personal and professional change in our lives:
