President's Letter |

Grow, Thrive, LeadThis is my last message as your Chapter President. Next month, I will gracefully retire to the Board position of "Past President." It is incredibly satisfying to leave the Chapter on a high note, with money in the bank, the most members we have ever had, and another huge W.E.B. event successfully achieved. I am especially proud of the level of participation of our members, which appears to be about 70%. We have an effective group of officers nominated to take over the reins, headed by May Pon. May had been Treasurer of the organization for several years, before becoming President-Elect for 2004-2005. May then proceeded to do a wonderful job chairing the WEB event which I keep hearing people say is the "best ever." This month you will be presented with the list of nominated officers, all of whom have proven their commitment and effectiveness as leaders of programs and committees. I hope that each of you will consider taking the first step toward being a NAWBO chapter president, which is to volunteer for a committee. We have a number of exciting projects going on and you will get a chance to interact with quality women business owners. You may find, as I did, that NAWBO supports you in developing new leadership skills as you venture from your comfort zone to help the organization move forward. Thanks to everyone for making my two years in office highly memorable and rewarding. "The best way to predict your future is to create it." Sharon Gadberry, Ph.D.

Women Entrepreneurs Benefit and NAWBO-U 2005
"First we educate you, then we inspire you..." These words reflect the ringing theme that described the exciting and new NAWBO University educational sessions held in the morning on April 22, 2005, followed by the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter's 21st Annual Women Entrepreneurs Benefit luncheon and awards ceremony. In a first-of-its-kind educational forum for women business owners in the Northern California region, NAWBO-SF joined with Golden Gate University in presenting two outstanding educational sessions. The first session featured Golden Gate professor Diana Israel in a session titled "How to Partner and Compete with Big Business."
Concurrently, another session called "Surviving and Thriving through Fluctuating Business Cycles" had Mary O'Hara Devereaux, author of Navigating the Badlands, moderate a panel of extraordinary women entrepreneurs. We enjoyed the presentations by Julie Reinganum, BJ Hardman, Margo Souza ,and Katie O'Brien sharing their wisdom and successful experiences with real world business cycles. Comments received include: "Fun and personable, as well as highly informative." "Very dynamic speakers." "Interesting case studies." "Margo! Very fun and practical." "Diana is an excellent speaker, very knowledgeable."
NAWBO-SF President, Sharon Gadberry, presented San Francisco Fire Chief, Joanne Hayes-White, with the President's Woman of Influence Award. The President's Community Advocate Award was given to Equal Rights Advocates in absentia. The 2005 Trailblazer award was presented to Paula LeDuc, of Paula LeDuc Fine Catering, and the 2005 Rising Star award was presented to Loran May, of May & Associates, Inc. "Commitment to excellence, excitement and appreciation for clients and staff, doing what she loves, relationship first, attention to details"—these all describe the qualities that resonate with both Paula and Loran. Our honorees exemplify the passion, excellence, and determination of outstanding stars in our community. Guests at WEB always leave energized and excited about the unlimited possibilities open to them, inspired by these remarkable women. This year was no exception. NAWBO is proud, as we have been for 21 years, to showcase women-owned businesses as leaders, promoting them and helping them succeed in business.
We would like to thank all our corporate partners, including Citibank, Wells Fargo, and Chevron Texaco for their help with volunteers and in-kind contributions. Diana Kimbrell, of Kimbrell & Co., and Maggie Braff, of Kennedy Events, took numerous extra steps to help make our event successful. We thank our WEB committee of 20 extraordinary members who contributed their time and expertise. Your enthusiasm and dedicated efforts made a difference and was most appreciated. Coming soon—more photos!
Thank You From Your Rising Star
I just wanted to follow up with a thank you for the lovely awards event—the whole NAWBO team worked exceptionally hard and pulled off a really great event. I was impressed by the beautiful hall, the decorations, the number of attendees, NAWBO-U (I hear it was very informative from the 2 employees I sent there), the quality of the speakers, and everything! Great job. Your hard work paid off! Thank you for this special award. I think that was my "15-minutes of fame" and I enjoyed every minute of it. The award itself is lovely. I will look at it fondly for years to come, and the certificates from our Senators—WOW!!! The video was top-notch—Janel and Dan did an amazing job of cutting hours and hours of tape down to a really tight and informative 3 minutes!!! I could only see it over my shoulder, but am looking forward to watching it again once I find a VCR machine. Again, thank you for the award. This has been the most amazing experience! Regards,

NAWBO California Business Women Meet With Governor Schwarzenegger in Sacramento
The delegation was in Sacramento for the NAWBO-CA Legislative Action Summit. The group spent two days in the capital to meet with legislators to discuss issues such as health care, preschool for all, workers comp., unemployment, and the governor’s reform package. The delegation of NAWBO leaders and members who met with the governor was made up of 30 women business owners from throughout California. Cathy Daugherty, Vice President of Legislative Action for NAWBO-CA, had set up a meeting with staff members from the governor’s office, which then turned into a face to face with the governor himself. The governor spoke about the importance of government being run like a business and the need for accountability in politics. He also urged the group to continue letting their voice be heard at the state and local level. The two-day Legislative Action Summit is an annual event that provides a chance for women business owners to speak up and be heard at the capital. Each day is filled with lectures and seminars to help educate women on legislation that affects business. |

NAWBO Member Diana Kimbrell to be Honored at MDA Event
Since founding Kimbrell & Company, Diana has used her background in sales and extensive contacts in the media and corporate worlds to create successful "marriages" between community groups and businesses. Diana credits her "bilingual" expertise—the ability to understand and speak the language of both nonprofits and corporations—which gives her the edge in fostering strategic communication between the two sectors. "Much of the success of any type of partnership—whether it be sponsorship, cause-corporate, B2B or B2C—is in the way that it is communicated between the parties," states Diana. "We believe that if you understand the needs of each sector, you can build long-lasting partnerships with integrity." Kimbrell & Company has worked on strategic alliances for Aetna US Healthcare, Blue Shield of California, Staples, Inc., California Transplant Donor Network, Omega Boys Club and many more California companies and organizations. She also develops the corporate partnerships for NAWBO, and her approach has been responsible for creating long lasting relationships for NAWBO with companies such as Wells Fargo, Citibank, Chevron Texaco, California Bank & Trust, City National Bank and many more. B Ingram, MDA's California Regional Director states, "We are delighted to honor Diana Kimbrell for her fine work assisting the nonprofit community to increase visibility and viability to the corporate sector. Diana has utilized her experience and expertise in both genres to provide an invaluable service." This spring Diana is also introducing a series of teleclasses designed to help nonprofits learn how to create partnerships with corporations. She explains, "Corporations have been much more savvy in creating these types of alliances. I like to educate nonprofits so they can better understand how to structure and benefit from these type of partnerships." The Gateway to a Cure event will take place on May 25 at the Julia Morgan Ballroom of the Merchants Exchange Club in San Francisco. • Find out more, including registration information, in the attached • For information on Kimbrell & Company, visit www.kimbrell-co.com |
